Information on data processing when using the GILI translation interface
Important Notice
When using GILI for translation, your text data may be transmitted to external AI providers! Please read the following information particularly carefully!
GILI is a web-based translation interface that provides access to AI-powered translation services using Large Language Models (LLMs). The service is made available to users at Goethe University Frankfurt (hereinafter GU) and provides professional translation capabilities for academic and administrative texts.
The use of GILI is voluntary and is intended only for official use. Use of the service is only possible after prior consent to the privacy policy and terms of use. These can be found further down on this page.
We try to collect and store as little personal data as possible. The data that is collected is necessary for the technical provision or improvement of the service.
- GILI is hosted on secure infrastructure managed in accordance with university data protection standards.
- We use translation models from external providers (e.g., OpenAI models like âGPT-4o-miniâ), your text inputs will be transmitted to these external providers for translation processing!
- We have ensured through the use of proxy services that your own IP address is never transmitted to external providers. All translation requests you make to GILI are processed through secure infrastructure, which then forwards your translation requests anonymously to external providers.
- You are responsible for the content of your translation inputs and the use of GILI is subject to the terms of use of the tool as well as the privacy policies of external providers.
- You are generally prohibited from translating personal or sensitive data!
- As an alternative, we have also integrated local LLMs (Mistral, LLaMA) into GILI for translation. These run on secure infrastructure without transmitting translation data to external providers and your translation inputs are not used for training purposes.

- NO WARRANTIES ARE PROVIDED - this service is offered âAS ISâ with no guarantees of accuracy, availability, or fitness for any purpose.
- THE GILI TEAM AND GOETHE UNIVERSITY FRANKFURT DISCLAIM ALL LIABILITY for any damages, losses, or consequences arising from your use of this service.
- VIOLATION OF THESE TERMS will result in immediate termination of access and may lead to disciplinary action.
- THESE TERMS MAY CHANGE at any time without notice. Continued use constitutes acceptance of any changes.

- ⢠Access to GILI is non-transferable and may not be shared with third parties.
- ⢠The use of GILI is voluntary and does not replace contractual or official duties.
- ⢠The use of GILI is restricted to official purposes and may not be used for private purposes.
- ⢠The use of GILI is intended for translation of academic, research, and administrative documents only, not for general conversation, creative writing, or other non-translation purposes.
- ⢠The use of GILI translation outputs for critical decisions without human review is prohibited. All translations must be reviewed and verified before use in official contexts.
2. Responsible Use of the Service
To ensure security and data protection, responsible use of the service is essential.
- Protection of personal data must be ensured.
You are not permitted to input personal or sensitive data for translation in GILI. - Protection of confidential information must be ensured.
You are not permitted to input confidential information from Goethe University Frankfurt or third parties for translation in GILI. - Copyright must be observed.
You are not permitted to input copyrighted content for translation without proper authorization. - Translation outputs may be inaccurate or inappropriate.
Check all translation outputs carefully before use. You are responsible for the accuracy and appropriateness of translations and their use in any official context.
3. Goethe University Frankfurt IT Resource Usage Policies
- ⢠The use of GILI must comply with Goethe University Frankfurt policies and regulations.
- ⢠The General ICT Usage Policy of Goethe University Frankfurt applies.
- ⢠Confidentiality of sensitive information must be maintained and data protection must be observed.
- ⢠It is prohibited to use the service for illegal or abusive activities.
- ⢠Applicable copyright law must be observed.
4. Handling Confidential Information and Personal Data
- It is not permitted to input personal data of other persons (e.g., students or employees) for translation without their express consent. This includes that no personal information such as names, contact details or other private information may be included in translation inputs.
- It is not permitted to input university-internal data, business and official secrets as well as other personal or confidential information for translation. There is always a certain risk that translation data could be intercepted or compromised.
- This regulation applies equally to local and cloud-based models. When using external LLMs in particular, it should be noted that data is transmitted to the provider and is no longer under the control of Goethe University Frankfurt.
5. Use of External LLM Providers
Since when using external LLM providers all inputs must be forwarded to their servers, the usage and privacy terms of the respective providers also apply.
Microsoft Azure OpenAI Services:
When using translation models provided via âMicrosoft Azure OpenAI Servicesâ (e.g. gpt-4o or gpt-4o-mini), the translation inputs made in GILI are forwarded to âMicrosoft Azure OpenAI Servicesâ servers. Therefore, the Microsoft Terms of Use for using Azure Services and theMicrosoft Code of Conduct for Generative AI also apply, which you accept by using this service.
6. Liability
Goethe University Frankfurt disclaims responsibility for the content generated by GILI.

- ⢠The service utilizes various AI models and technologies to provide translation capabilities.
Goethe University Frankfurt assumes no responsibility and liability for the accuracy or quality of translations provided by the service.
- ⢠The translation outputs are generated by AI models based on training data that may contain inaccuracies, biases, or errors. Translation outputs may be incorrect, inappropriate, or contextually wrong. Therefore, all translations must be carefully reviewed and verified before use.
- ⢠You are responsible for the accuracy and appropriateness of all translation inputs and outputs, as well as their use and consequences. Use translation outputs only after careful review and verification, and at your own risk.
